“Know/Knew of Me”

One thing that genuinely pisses me off - when people know me because of who I’ve dated in the past. When people don’t know me for me but instead, for who my exes were. I know, I’ve done it to a few people too and I apologize but I really just hate when people I don’t really know decide to say,

“Hey, didn’t you date ____________?” or
“Hey, weren’t you _________’s girlfriend?” or
“Hey, are you still with ________?”

My past is not something I like to talk about. Yes, I understand that it made me who I am but it doesn’t mean that I necessarily want my past to be how you remember me by. If you think that it makes a moment less awkward, it doesn’t. If anything, it probably makes it even more awkward. It’s probably better if you just asked,

“Hey, you look familiar. Did you go to TMCC/UNR?”

Or something along those lines. There is absolutely no need for anyone to bring up anyone’s past. Don’t know what to say in place of the three examples above? Then how about you just not say anything? =p
